Syslog: System Logging Protocol

Widely use logging protocol where formatted logs are
sent from a device to a central 'syslog' server on the network
Technical Details:
Port: 514
Protocol: UDP
Introduction Date: 1980's
Encrypted: No (Optional TCP/6514 standard using TLS exists, but not widely adopted)
Vendor: Open

Uses:
- Receive logs from an extremely wide range of devices and applications
- Monitor events on the network: network cable plugged in, printer out of paper
Notes:
- Due to syslog being event driven instead of 'polling', it may
not reliabily alert on major failures or act as a monitoring service
- Syslog messages are not encrypted and should only be used within a local network
